Early Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontics
for Kids
Every child’s smile develops differently, and knowing when to start orthodontic treatment can feel overwhelming for parents.
At Lazzara Orthodontics, we take a thoughtful, individualized approach to early orthodontic care.
We take the time to evaluate growth carefully, explain what we’re seeing clearly, and only recommend treatment when the timing truly makes sense for your child.
Your ABO-Board Certified Children’s Orthodontists
Our goal isn’t to rush children into braces. It’s to guide healthy development, create beautiful long-term results, and make the experience feel positive and comfortable for both kids and parents.
With Dr. Lazzara and Dr. Poblenz (two ABO-Board Certified orthodontists) collaborating on care, your child benefits from an exceptional level of experience, attention, and expertise.
An Experience Designed for Kids (and Their Parents)
We’ve intentionally created an environment that feels welcoming, relaxed, and easy to settle into.
From friendly conversations and office tours to TVs, rewards, and a team that knows how to help nervous patients feel comfortable, every detail is designed to help children feel at home.
And for parents, that same thoughtful experience means:
- Appointments that stay on time
- Clear explanations and honest guidance
- Plenty of time with your orthodontist
- A team that genuinely listens and cares
When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
At this stage, we’re able to evaluate jaw growth, bite development, spacing concerns, and how permanent teeth are beginning to erupt.
For many children, the right next step is simply observation.
At Lazzara Orthodontics, we carefully monitor growth over time and only recommend early treatment when we believe it will truly benefit your child’s long-term smile and development.
Is early orthodontic treatment necessary?
Not always. Sometimes the best approach is simply monitoring growth and allowing development to continue naturally while we keep a close eye on things over time.
However, there are situations where early orthodontic treatment can make a significant difference, especially when jaw growth, crossbites, severe crowding, or eruption concerns are involved.
- Why we’re recommending it
- What benefits we expect to achieve
- What happens if we wait
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
- Guide jaw growth and bite development
- Create space for incoming permanent teeth
- Correct crossbites and other developing bite concerns
- Reduce the severity of future crowding
- Lower the likelihood of extractions or jaw surgery later
- Improve facial balance and smile aesthetics
- Support healthier oral function and development
A Thoughtful Approach to Two-Phase Orthodontics
In some cases, orthodontic care is completed in two carefully timed phases.
Phase I Orthodontic Treatment
Phase I treatment typically begins between ages 7 and 10 while some baby teeth are still present.
The goal of this phase is to guide jaw development, create space when needed, and address developing problems before they become more severe.
Depending on your child’s needs, treatment may include:
- Palatal expanders
- Early orthodontic appliances
- Limited braces
- Phase I clear aligners in select cases
Phase II Orthodontic Treatment
After growth and tooth development continue, Phase II treatment focuses on final alignment and bite refinement once most or all permanent teeth have erupted.
This phase may include:
- Braces
- Clear aligners
- Detailed bite correction and smile alignment
Because every child develops differently, treatment timing and recommendations are always personalized.
