Spring break is one of the most anticipated times of the year. Whether the plan is a beach trip, a theme park adventure, or a road trip through new towns, the last thing most people want to think about is their orthodontic care. But here is the reality: your braces or clear aligners do not take a vacation just because you do. Skipping your routine for even a few days can lead to discomfort, potential damage, or delays in your treatment timeline.
The good news is that traveling with orthodontic treatment does not have to be complicated. At Lazzara Orthodontics, we want every patient to enjoy their spring break to the fullest, and a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your smile on track, no matter where you end up.
Schedule a Pre-Trip Appointment
Before you head out, it is worth scheduling a quick check-in with our team. A pre-trip visit allows us to confirm everything is in good shape, replace any worn elastics, and address small issues before they become bigger problems away from home.
If your adjustment appointment falls right around your departure date, let us know in advance. We can work with your schedule so you leave feeling confident about the state of your treatment. It is also a great time to stock up on supplies like orthodontic wax, extra rubber bands, and any other essentials you might need on the road.
Pack a Braces-Ready Travel Kit
Good oral hygiene does not have to slip just because your routine changes. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends brushing after every meal and bringing an interproximal brush along with dental floss wherever you go, since food can easily hide around brackets and wires. A well-stocked travel kit is one of the smartest steps you can take before leaving home.
Here are the essentials to pack before any trip:
- A travel-sized toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Dental floss or floss threaders made for braces
- An interproximal brush for cleaning around brackets
- Orthodontic wax in case of irritation from wires or brackets
- Extra rubber bands
- A small mirror for checking your teeth after meals
- Travel-sized mouthwash
Keep everything in your carry-on if you are flying, so it stays within reach throughout your trip. Even quick rinses with water after meals can make a meaningful difference when brushing is not immediately possible. For those wearing clear aligners, be sure to also bring a retainer case and any cleaning tablets you use at home.
Mind What You Eat
Vacation food is one of the biggest temptations when it comes to braces care. Theme park treats, boardwalk snacks, and local cuisine can be exciting to try, but some foods are harder on brackets and wires. Sticky, hard, and crunchy foods can pop brackets loose or bend wires at the worst possible time, potentially slowing your progress or causing discomfort for the rest of your trip. Soft foods are generally the safest bet, and there are plenty of delicious options that do not put your treatment at risk.
If you are wearing Invisalign or Clarity clear aligners, remember that aligner care on the road requires consistency. Aligners need to be worn for 18 to 20 hours per day, even when you are relaxing at the beach or staying out later than usual. Removing them for meals is necessary, but reinserting them right after eating keeps your treatment timeline intact.
Know What to Do in an Orthodontic Emergency
Minor issues can come up even with the best preparation. A loose bracket, a poking wire, or a lost aligner tray are not reasons to panic, but they do require a calm, informed response.
If a wire is poking your cheek, use orthodontic wax to cover the sharp end and call our office. We can advise you over the phone on whether you need to see a local provider or whether the issue can wait until you return. For a loose or broken bracket, avoid hard and sticky foods, continue brushing and flossing around it as best you can, and reach out to us as soon as possible. If you lose an aligner tray, do not skip to the next set without first consulting our team, as wearing the previous set may be the right move while you wait to hear from us.
Keep Up Your Hygiene Routine
Vacation schedules make it easy to stay out late, eat at unusual times, and fall into less structured habits. Consistent brushing and flossing remain the backbone of healthy teeth and successful orthodontic treatment; however, a few days of laxity can have a real impact. Brushing at least twice a day and after meals, along with daily flossing, keeps plaque from building up in the hard-to-reach spaces around brackets and wires. The AAO’s oral hygiene guidelines for patients in orthodontic treatment also recommend rinsing with water when brushing is not immediately available, which is a practical habit to build into any trip.
