When an orthodontic emergency strikes, taking the right immediate actions can minimize discomfort and prevent further complications before you reach our office.

For protruding wires, orthodontic wax provides temporary relief by covering sharp edges and smoothing them out. If wax isn’t available, a small piece of cotton or even sugar-free gum can serve as a short-term barrier. When possible, use a clean pencil eraser or Q-tip to gently push the wire back into place. Never attempt to cut the wire yourself, as this could lead to accidentally swallowing wire pieces or causing additional damage.

If a bracket becomes loose but remains attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax to prevent irritation. For completely detached brackets, save the piece and bring it to your emergency appointment. Rinsing with warm salt water helps soothe irritated tissues and reduce the risk of infection around damaged appliances.

Managing Pain Until Your Appointment

Effective pain management makes the time between your emergency and your appointment more bearable:

• Apply ice packs to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling
• Take age-appropriate doses of ibuprofen or acetaminophen
• Stick to soft, cool foods that don’t require extensive chewing
• Avoid extremely hot or cold beverages that might increase sensitivity
